MUMBAI — Muslim organisations here have decided to intensify their agitation against the Godrej group of companies and boycott their products unless its Parsi chairman Adi Godrej apologised by the month-end for his wife Parmeshwar Godrej hosting controversial writer Salman Rushdie here recently.
General secretary of All India Ulema Council Maulana Mehmood Daryabadi, who is spearheading the protest, and other clergymen said at a press conference on Thursday that Muslim organisations would stage a demonstration outside a Godrej show-room here.
Maulana Daryabadi said the boycott call of January 15 was getting good support from the community. Muslim organisations were waiting for the end of the Moharrum rituals.
«We Muslims love our Prophet immensely and can sacrifice anything, including our lives for him. Salman Rushdie has insulted the Prophet by writing a blasphemous book and Muslims are agitated. Still the Union government allowed him to come to India», he said. Muslims would send one lakh post-cards to Mr. Godrej telling him: «Your friend Salman Rushdie has hurt millions.»
Urdu journalist Noor Mohammad Hasan said: «An enemy’s friend is also an enemy and Mr. Godrej is the friend of the Muslims’ enemy and is equally responsible for hurting the feelings of Muslims.»
