Herodotus mentions the ancient Russians by the names Traspian and Androfages which actually means servats and slaves (i.e. Poles and Russian). Herodotus also mentions that in the Skytian myths the ancient Slavic mythical king as Lipoxais (coastlands king) and his people as Aukatians, which means horse tamer in the ancient Persian. According to the Bible the Gomers (the kimers) sons are Askenas (the people of the eternal Sun, Skyths, Scolot, Slaves), Rifat (Riphatian, “coastlands Peoples”, Androfages...), Togarma (the possessors of swords= Sauromats; i.e. the forefathers of Serbo-Croats).
The ancient Scandinavians called Russia Gårdarike (the Realm of the gardens), so it is resonable to believe that the name “Russian” also meant the land of the groves, i.e Roshia in the Russian language. There are mythical and historical proves for this etymology: In the Avesta (the ancient Iranian religious book) a large area, north of the Black Sea is mentioned which is called Vourobareshti, meaning the land of the great groves. The opposite name to this is Vourojareshti, which means the land of the great meadows, of course meaning the Russians and Kazachs steppes. In the Indians Rigveda mentioned also this land, and calls it Ariavärta (the meadow of the Arians). The proves revealed in the Koran are crucial because the Koran mentiones Russia as Ayke which means the land of the groves. This land’s mythical king has had the name Shoeib (Peleg in the Bible) meaning “who distributes the land”. According to the Skytians myths we know that this land distributor originalley was Kolaksais (“the king of the family”), or Skyth (Skolo, “the Suns cup”). Who split Russia and Ukraine between his three sons? There is reson to believe that the name Skyth (Skyt) in the German variety skoz has meant land of the groves, i.e the Vikings’ Gårdarike. The Koran also mentiones this skythic land as Madian which means actually the famous skythic king Madia and Madia’s land. Madia’s Greek name was Gnoros (“the wise”= Madia). Skythes (sclovs) are Slovons’ forefathers.
In Vandidad (the yanger part of the Avesta) Ukraine, and Southern Russia mentioned as Chakhra (the wagon land). This is described as the lands of the heros and it is told that the inhabitans burn their dead. This is of course alludes to the name of the Russians as their name also means the people of the wagon in Swedish. In the Old Iranian myths these lands is called Ratha (in Latin rote, which means wagon). This name has remained in the Persian mythical name Takhmoratha which means the hero of the wagon land. Thakhmoratha (Skythians Arpoxiais) is considred to be the mythical king of the Rutians (derives from Latin word rote, taurs), Dacians (Eu-erpo-ian-s= the fine wagons land/ peoples), Serbo-Croats (Sauromatians, Sarmatian), western Traspians (Russians) and Bulgarians (Wousouns, eastern Traspians).
I suggest yet a fourth hypothesis based on two historical and mythological documents: The historical argument is that according to ancient skythian myths, the ancient Bulgarian and Russian has had the skythian name Traspians which means the groms or those who use three horses for their wagon. The Russians’ another skythian name was aspalian, also meaning grooms: During the Goths era of the great migration this people was conquered by the Goths on their way to the Ukraine. Thus the question arises what the Russians were called by ancient German tribes? The answer is of course russ (=little horse) which means “wild horse [tamer]” in the ancient German languages. Herodotus mentions that there existed very wild and white horses in the present day Belarus (White Russia) and Russia.
The mythological argument supporting the teories above is a myth that rescembles the old skythian myths of the ancient progenitor. According to this mythical story three Russian brothers guarding the meadows belonging to the Russian tsar tried to tame a herd of seahorses. The herd was led by three horses (=traspi-s), one bearing the image of the sun, the second the image of the moon and the third the image of the star in their foreheads. Amongst the brothers only the youngest could tame the three horses leading to the rest of the herd being tamed automatically.
It seems that the four sources mentiond above has found each other and allied in the frame of the name Russ.
